We had an honor to speak with AR creator Melih Beysim, who started in 2019 creating Instagram and Facebook effects and now creates custom effects for clients. He believes AR is a powerful tool for creative expression and sees endless possibilities for innovation. Melih finds inspiration in positive feedback from clients and stays up-to-date with the latest AR trends and technology.
Let’s start from the beginning! How did you start your AR journey? What inspired you to become a creator and what keeps you motivated to continue creating for this industry?
In 2019, I embarked on my AR journey as an amateur by creating effects for Meta Spark on Instagram and Facebook. I started with simple face masks featuring planets, flowers, and other basic designs because I had limited knowledge and the AR creation platforms were not as advanced as they are now.
The response to my first effects was overwhelming, with many people sending messages expressing their love for the effects and how they were using them. It was a gratifying feeling to know that I had created something that people appreciated, and this motivated me to keep creating more effects. Before long, I had posted over 15 effects and my skills were improving, leading to requests for custom effects.
It’s been an exciting and rewarding journey so far, and I’m constantly learning and growing my skills. Creating AR experiences allows me to share my creativity and imagination with others and make a positive impact on their lives.
What is AR for you?
For me, AR is a powerful tool for creative expression and storytelling. It allows me to blend the virtual world with the real world, creating immersive experiences that can captivate and engage people in unique ways. AR enables me to bring my ideas to life and share them with others in a way that is visually stunning and interactive. It’s a constantly evolving field that offers endless possibilities for innovation and experimentation, and I’m excited to be a part of it. Ultimately, AR is about using technology to enhance our understanding of the world around us and create new ways of experiencing it.
How do you see the future of AR evolving? What kind of opportunities do you think it will bring to creators and brands?
I see AR becoming more mainstream and integrated into our daily lives, with new and innovative use cases emerging across a wide range of industries.
For creators and brands, AR represents a huge opportunity to connect with audiences in exciting new ways. It offers a new medium for storytelling and marketing, allowing brands to create immersive experiences that engage and captivate customers. Creators can use AR to showcase their work and push the boundaries of what’s possible, opening up new avenues for creativity and expression.
Overall, the future of AR is incredibly exciting, and I can’t wait to see how it evolves in the years to come. As technology becomes more advanced and accessible, I believe we’ll see even more innovative and impactful applications emerge, leading to a whole new era of digital experiences.
Who or what inspires you in your work, and can you describe your working process? Do you follow a plan or work spontaneously? Do you have a specific style that sets you apart from other creators?
As a result-oriented person, I find that the positive feedback and satisfaction of my clients motivate me the most. While I do occasionally follow a plan, I am often inspired by spontaneous ideas and the rush of excitement that comes with creating something new and innovative. For me, the creative process is an exhilarating journey that is driven by passion and the desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
I believe that every artist has their own unique style and way of interpreting the world around them. This individuality is what makes art so powerful and resonant, as it reflects the artist’s personal vision and perspective.
Can you share an example of a project where you pushed the boundaries of what is possible with AR technology and what kind of impact did it have?
One of the recent projects that I’m particularly proud of is an effect I created for the legendary band Rammstein. Inspired by the cover of their album Sehnsucht, the effect was made up of four modules and involved creating detailed 3D objects using specialized software. The challenge was that the effect had to be suitable for both Meta Spark (Instagram) and Effect House (TikTok), which meant creating identical effects using different software with different capabilities. I’m happy to say that the project was a success and the client is pleased with the results, as the effects are being used on both platforms with great engagement.
Collaboration is a crucial aspect of creating successful AR projects. Can you share an example of a project where you had to balance a client’s needs with your creative vision? How did you navigate that challenge?
Before starting any project with a client, I always make sure to consult with them to fully understand their needs and goals for the AR experience. This collaborative approach helps to ensure that we are on the same page and working towards a common objective.
One project that I am particularly proud of is the “GOLDEN BALL HS8” effect that I created for Hristo Stoichkov. In this project, we wanted to incorporate a 3D animated golden ball into the experience, and after consulting with the client, we decided to add it on top of the heads of the users. Our goal was to create the impression that the soccer ball was bouncing on their head, which added an element of fun and playfulness to the experience. I believe that this project showcases the power of collaboration and how it can lead to truly innovative and impactful results.
I am extremely pleased that the clients I work with trust my professional experience and are ready to experiment.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technology in the AR industry, and how do you incorporate this knowledge into your work?
To stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technology in the AR industry, I regularly read relevant publications and blogs, and follow key influencers and thought leaders in the field. I also experiment with new tools and techniques to keep my skills sharp and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Incorporating this knowledge into my work is an ongoing process that involves a combination of creativity and technical expertise. I strive to strike a balance between staying true to my personal style and vision while also incorporating new ideas and techniques that enhance the overall impact of my work.
Can you share any tips or tricks you’ve learned along the way that have helped you to create successful AR projects?
One of the most important pieces of advice I can give to aspiring AR creators is to prioritize clear communication with your customers. Understanding their needs and offering a sustainable solution to their business problems is crucial for success in this industry.
When it comes to personal effects, my advice is to create effects that you would actually use in your everyday life, rather than just creating them for the sake of gaining more impressions. By staying true to your own interests and vision, you will attract like-minded people and create a more authentic and engaged community around your work.
What do you enjoy most about being an AR creator, and how do you balance the technical aspects of AR creation with the creative side? What advice would you give to aspiring AR creators who are just starting out?
What I enjoy most about being an AR creator is the ability to bring my ideas to life and create experiences that engage and delight users. The intersection of technology and creativity is what makes AR creation so exciting for me, and I love exploring new ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
For aspiring AR creators who are just starting out, my advice would be to keep learning and experimenting. Don’t be afraid to try new things and push the boundaries of what you think is possible.
